Why Don’t You Grow Up?

“Growing Up” is one of our key emphases here at CBC. Paul makes that idea something of a mission statement for his ministry in Colossians 1:28-29.

Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

But how does one become mature in Christ? The answer is right there in the text. Increased maturity comes with an increased knowledge of Jesus.

After almost thirty years in vocational ministry, I can say without a doubt that a person’s devotional habits are the best single indicator of their spiritual trajectory. It is so easy to get out of the basic habits of the spiritual life: reading your Bible, going to church, and praying. If you are a Christian, I challenge you to recommit to these things anew this year. If you are not, I challenge you to try these habits out and discover the answers and peace that are available in Christ.

Make a resolution to start 2026 with a plan that makes sense for you. It’s not about conquering a goal, it is about getting to know the God of the Universe. We do that reading what He reveals about Himself in His Word.1 We do that by talking to Him (and allowing Him to talk to us) in prayer. We do that together weekly in corporate worship.

If you need help establishing these habits, talk to someone. If you don’t feel like you have anyone to talk to, please see me. I would love to connect you with someone who can help.
