What is the Gospel? Quite simply, it means the 'Good News'! But the Good News about what? That's more than a great question, it's the question. It's the Good News about what God has done for you through His son Jesus Christ.
But to understand the question and the answer contained in the Good News, you have to realize a few things.
First, you need to accept that God is infinite, almighty, and in control. He created all things, He makes the rules, He sets the standards. God is God and you are not. That's very important to understand.
Second, you need to know that 'sin' or 'sinning' are those things we do that go against God's standards and displease Him. In fact, God is so perfect and has set such a high standard that to sin against Him results in death (Romans 6:23). This doesn't just mean you will physically die but that you will be eternally separated from God spiritually and will be sentenced to eternity in Hell. You have to understand and accept that you are a sinner (Romans 3:23). It's part of your very nature. So where's the Good News in that?
That's where Jesus Christ comes in. Even though Jesus has existed with God the Father for eternity past as the second member of the Trinity, about 2,000 years ago he was born as a flesh and blood human, miraculously still God, but also fully man. He grew up on earth but, unlike you and me, he lived a perfect, sinless life.
And then Jesus did something amazing!
Jesus allowed himself to be punished, tortured and killed on a cross for all the sins you have committed. He faced the rejection of God (spiritual death) in our place so we would not have to pay that price. Then he did something even more amazing. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, conquering sin and death once and for all! He did this so you could be reunited with God the Father. For those who understand and accept this free gift of salvation they no longer have to fear spiritual death, rejection and separation from God and eternity in Hell. Those who accept this act of grace and mercy from God now not only get to go to Heaven some day when they physically die but get to live out the remainder of their lives as members of God's Family (Romans 10:9)! Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, if you believe, accept and commit, you can become a child of God!
Now that's Good News!
